    One of my favourite Americans – Kornelius Vanderbilt, the first ultra-rich capitalist, was from New York. I think there’s a statue of him in the railway station. He was of Dutch origin, and so was the city – founded by Dutch settlers, its first name was New Amsterdam. There’s a wonderful history of New York written by Washington Irving.
