karlIf we had him as classmate, we would have probably despised him. Yes, because Karl Lagerfeld was like this even at 10 years old. A precocious genius wearing immaculate white shirts with an extraordinary intelligence, creativity and a budding workaholic soul. Karl, himself, confesses how his pedantry was unbearable, but it was this rigorous attitude towards work and his inexhaustible will to learn, that lead him to become a fashion legend, one of the big names that dictates rules and trends to this day. Creative Director of 3 brands. among which 2 top names –Fendi and Chanel, which he rescued from failure, making it once again a reference brand even for the youngest crowd- he designs an uncountable number of collections every year, still continuing to bring new ideas that go beyond just style to the catwalks. The first sneakers in a couture show? His idea, of course. And guess who inaugurated the first low cost collaborations designing a collection with H&M? Yes, him again. Famous for his little obsessions like Coke Light, which he sips constantly and his cat Choupette, that became an icon in its own right with collections dedicated to her (did you know the cat was originally his friend’s Baptiste Giabiconi, who ask him to take care of it and never had it back?). He is as self-centered as self-mocking and never spares anyone his spicy judgment, not even to his own self. Photographer, Artistic Director, Film Director and Designer, it’s only a mystery how he could do it all and do it so well. But this is not the only  mystery about him. His date of birth is not so certain either. Some say he was born on September 10th 1933, but in many occasions he said that the correct year is somewhere between 1935 and 1938. Whatever his age might be, we celebrate him dedicating him our Inspiration of the Week, that inaugurates the fashion month. Because, let’s admit it: what kind of fashion (month) will it be without Karl Lagerfeld?

  • Actually, it was Isaac Mizrahi who pioneered the low cost one time designer capsule collection. 🙂
