7500 km driving, 29 days on the road, 15 different hotels, 8 friends who became 11 for the last part of the trip, at least 20 hamburgers eaten by each of us, zero broken tires and a positive energy which is not possible to describe during the whole trip. This was our Coast to Coast.
I’ve been dreaming about this trip for years: I visited a lot of places, took a lot of flights, visited different countries but, since I was a kid, I’ve always thought about the “Coast to Coast” as “the trip”. I’ve been trying to convince my friends to organize this adventure but, for one reason or the other one, we have never been able to. Last summer, after we got home from Istanbul we took the decision. We’ve been talking about it for the last 12 months: everytime we were going out together we used to imagine the roadtrip, fight about the stops and promise each other to book the flights as soon as possible. The trip started to come to life last February: once arrived at our friend Matteo’s house in Paris for fashionweek we took some hours off while having breakfast and we started to write down our first idea of the journey. At the end of May we booked the flight to New York and the flight back from San Francisco. We then reunited together at the beginning of July to book 2 of the 15 hotels we stayed in during the holiday: the one in New York where we would have arrived on the 27th July and the one in Las Vegas, that we would have reached on the 12th August. We decided all the other ones during the trip, looking for hotels on the internet and booking the day before or even while driving to the next destination.
It was one of most touching months of my life, and I had the chance to share this experience with some of my closest friends, living every moment at its fullest. I can already picture myself at the age of 70 going through these pics and thinking about this trip, telling the funniest stories to my nephews, ahahah. I probably don’t need to think about such a far time: I already feel gloomy when I see all the magnets I got in the different places in my kitchen.
A lot of you asked me by emails or comments questions about this trip and in this post I want to answer to some of those, spuring you to live my same experience when you have a chance.
Some infos for you:
-A lot of you asked me about the luggage I got, thinking about maxi trolleys and bags: in the second photo of the post you can see all the luggage Richi and I brought with us (you only have to add the reflex small bag). The luggage I always carry with me on trips is the loyal Dakine my dad got me 6 years ago, which visited the whole globe with me. Inside I put all my clothes for a month trip, excluding shoes, bags and jewels that I put in my smallest Samsonite bag (that I can carry with me on the plane). In the maxi Balenciaga I managed to squeeze in my laptop, some books, makeup case, passport, mobile phones etc..
Carpisa maxi pink trolley was Richi’s suitcase. Ok, It’s not fair to say this (making the land hostess laugh so bad when I told her It was Richi’s is apparently not enough): truth is I begged Richi to use my Barbie maxi trolley because It’s much bigger compared to the one he usually takes with him (and my one month shopping got all inside it on the way back). For my looks I chose to wear shorts, tshirts and shirts most of the time, trying different combinations and making the laundry each time It was possible during our stops.
-We booked the hotels stop by stop, trying to be on a budget without giving up on the cleanliness. We slept in wonderful hotels (I suggest you to try La Hacienda in Santa Fe and The Roosevelt in Los Angeles) and in some very cheap ones (in one hotel in Farmington we woke up in the morning without water in the room because we were in the middle of the desert), trying all the different experiences.
We never slept in a motel, especially after all the terrible stories you told me about on Instagram, but I would have loved to try that as well.
If you have some more time to organize you should book some hotels in advance so you can spend even less and have more choice. We always were at least 8 people and we often had to arrange last minute: sometimes Richi and I had a double room but most of the time we all were split in 2 different rooms for 4 people each (the positive thing about it was having my friends helping me to straight my hair before sleeping and the cost per person which was cheap) 🙂
-We spent some entire days in the cities without driving for a minute (3 days in New York, 4 days in Chicago, 3 days in Las Vegas, 5 days in Los Angeles and 3 days in San Francisco) and we spent other days almost driving all the time (the longest trip was from Oklahoma to Santa Fe: 900 km). American roads are straight and easy and, changing the drivers after some hours, the trip wasn’t too heavy.
-We tried as many experiences as we could: we went around in quads at Bryce Canyon, drove horses at Monument Valley, listened to jazz live music in St.Louis, tried every kind of american food (even dry meat, thanks Shea), lost 50 dollars gambling in Las Vegas, listened to Red Hot Chili Peppers live with thousands of other people at Lollapalooza in Chicago, sailed at Niagara falls with the small boat, took photos in front of Carrie Bradshaw’s building, tried the tallest rollercoasters in the world at Cedar Point… There are two things I regret for not doing at the time because I was lazy or scared (Richi and some of the guys tried them all): surfing in Santa Monica and riding the bull in Los Angeles. I’ll have to fix both of them next November.
-When we weren’t sure about restaurant and pubs I’ve always asked advice to you through Instagram or Twitter, and thanks to you I discovered amazing places. Sometimes we were also looking for reviews on Tripadvisor, which is useful for avoiding rip-offs.
-Thanks to a AT&T simcard I’ve had internet on my iphone all month, paying 25$ for every gigabyte (I spent 75$ total) and being able to update you in real time on Instagram, Twitter and fanpage, in addition to the blog.
I think that’s it more or less… There would be more to tell and show, but what gives me goosepumps the most even now, while I write this post, is the memory of that freedom and adventure I was feeling every morning, a feeling which was with me during all the trip, while I was looking out of the window listening to my favourite songs.
The inspiration for most of the projects you’ll see in the next months comes from this Coast to Coast.
Truth is the destination is not the important part, the journey is. And what a journey It has been.
7500 km di macchina, 29 giorni di viaggio on the road, 15 hotel diversi, 8 amici che nell’ultima parte del viaggio sono diventati 11, almeno una ventina di hamburger consumati a persona, zero gomme bucate ed un entusiasmo non quantificabile durante tutto il percorso. Questo è stato il nostro Coast to Coast.
Sognavo questo viaggio da anni: ho visto tanti posti, preso aerei e visitato continenti diversi, eppure da quando ero bambina ho sempre pensato al Coast to Coast degli Stati Uniti come “il viaggio”. Da un paio d’anni cercavo di convincere i miei amici a partire per questa avventura ma, per una ragione o per l’altra, non eravamo mai riusciti ad organizzare questo viaggio. L’estate scorsa, appena tornati da Istanbul, ci siamo decisi. Ne abbiamo parlato sempre nei dodici mesi passati: ogni volta che uscivamo insieme immaginavamo il tragitto, litigavamo sulle tappe e ci promettevamo a vicenda che avremmo prenotato gli aerei prima possibile. Il percorso si è materializzato lo scorso Febbraio: arrivati a Parigi a casa del mio amico Matteo per la fashionweek ci siamo presi qualche ora di pausa mentre facevamo colazione ed abbiamo trascritto l’idea embrionale del viaggio. A fine Maggio abbiamo prenotato il volo aereo di andata a New York ed il ritorno da San Francisco. Ci siamo poi ritrovati ad inizio luglio per prenotare 2 dei 15 hotel in cui abbiamo dormito durante la vacanza: quello di New York in cui saremmo arrivati il 27 luglio e quello di Las Vegas, che avremmo raggiunto il 12 agosto. Tutto il resto si è deciso strada facendo, cercando gli hotel su internet e prenotando il giorno prima o addirittura durante il tragitto.
E’ stato uno dei mesi più emozionanti della mia vita, ed ho avuto la fortuna di condividerlo con alcuni dei miei migliori amici, vivendo appieno ogni esperienza ed ogni luogo visitato. Già mi immagino 70enne mentre riguardo queste foto e penso alla magia di questo viaggio commossa, raccontandolo ai miei nipotini, ahahah. Forse non occorre pensare ad un tempo cosi lontano: già ora mi sento malinconica quando in cucina vedo tutte le calamite che ho comprato in ogni luogo in cui ci fermavamo.
Moltissimi di voi mi hanno scritto email o commenti facendomi alcune domande su questo viaggio ed in questo post voglio rispondere ad alcune di queste, spronandovi a provare la mia stessa esperienza quando ne avrete l’occasione.
Qualche chiarimento ed info per voi:
-Moltissimi mi hanno chiesto notizie sulle mie valigie, immaginando decine di maxi trolley e borse: nella prima foto del post potete vedere i bagagli completi miei e di Richi, a cui va solo aggiunto lo zaino della Reflex (che ho dimenticato di inserire). La valigia che porto sempre in viaggio è la fedele Dakine che mio padre mi aveva regalato ormai 6 anni fa e che con me ha visto praticamente l’intero globo. All’interno tutti i vestiti che ho indossato per un mese di viaggio, escluse scarpe, borse e gioielli che porto sempre nel trolley/bagaglio a mano di Samsonite. Nella maxi Balenciaga da viaggio sono riuscita a mettere computer, qualche libro, trucchi, passaporto, cellulari ecc.
Il maxi trolley rosa di Carpisa se l’è aggiudicato Richi per il viaggio. Ok, è ingiusto dire cosi (non basta aver fatto ridere l’hostess di terra dichiarando che fosse la sua valigia): la verità è che ho implorato Richi di usare il mio maxi trolley degno di Barbie perchè più grosso di quello che lui usa abitualmente (ed infatti sono riuscita a riempirlo fino all’orlo dello shopping fatto durante il viaggio). Per i look ho puntato su shorts, tshirt e camicette leggere, cercando di variare un pò senza portare con me l’intero armadio e lavando i vestiti sporchi ogni volta fosse possibile durante le tappe.
-Gli hotel li abbiamo scelti di tappa in tappa, cercando di spendere il meno possibile senza rinunciare alla pulizia ed alla comodità della zona. Abbiamo dormito in alcuni hotel stupendi (vi consiglio La Hacienda a Santa Fe e il Roosevelt a Los Angeles) ed in altri veramente poco costosi (in un hotel a Farmington ci siamo svegliati senza acqua corrente in camera perchè si trovava nel bel mezzo del deserto), cercando di provare tutte le diverse esperienze.
Non siamo mai stati a dormire in motel, soprattutto dopo le storie tremende che alcuni di voi mi hanno scritto su Instagram, ma avrei voluto provare anche quello. Se avete tempo di organizzare bene le cose vi basta prenotare alcuni hotel in anticipo per spendere ancora meno ed avere più scelta tra le varie strutture. Essendo sempre in almeno 8 persone spesso ci siamo dovuti adattare: alcune volte io e Richi dormivamo in camera doppia ma molto più spesso ci dividevamo tutti in 2 camere da 4 persone ognuna (il lato positivo era avere le mie amiche che mi aiutavano a lisciarmi i capelli prima di andare a dormire ed il costo per persona naturalmente più basso) 🙂
-Abbiamo passato giorni interi per le varie città senza quasi toccare la macchina (3 giorni a New York, 4 giorni a Chicago, 3 giorni a Las Vegas, 5 giorni a Los Angeles e 3 giorni a San Francisco) ed altri giorni in cui abbiamo guidato quasi tutto il giorno (la tappa più lunga è stata Oklahoma-Santa Fe di 900 km). Le strade americane sono in generale dritte e senza particolari ostacoli e, dandosi il cambio di guida il viaggio non è risultato troppo pesante.
-Abbiamo cercato di provare tutte le esperienze possibili: siamo andati in giro in quad al Bryce Canyon, abbiamo cavalcato nel bel mezzo della Monument Valley, ascoltato musica jazz live a St.Louis, provato ogni tipo di cibo americano (tra cui la carne essiccata, grazie Shea), perso 50 dollari giocando ai dadi a Las Vegas, ascoltato i Red Hot Chili Peppers insieme a migliaia di persone al Lollapalooza a Chicago, fatto la foto davanti alla casa di Carrie a New York, provato le montagne russe più alte del mondo a Cedar Point… Sono due le cose che alcuni dei ragazzi (tra cui Richi) hanno provato e che io mi sono persa perchè in quel momento pigra o fifona: surf a Santa Monica e cavalcata del toro meccanico a Los Angeles. A Novembre dovrò rimediare per entrambe.
-Per ristoranti e locali cercavo sempre di farmi consigliare da voi su Instagram o Twitter, e proprio grazie ai vostir consigli abbiamo trovato dei luoghi meravigliosi. In alternativa, cercavamo sempre le recensioni su Tripadvisor, utilissimo per non beccarsi fregature.
-Grazie ad una simcard di AT&T ho avuto internet tutto il mese, pagando 25 dollari ogni gigabyte (in tutto ho speso 75 dollari) e riuscendo ad aggiornarvi in tempo diretto su Instagram, Twitter e fanpage, nonché sul blog.
Penso più o meno sia tutto… Ci sarebbe molto altro da raccontarvi e mostrarvi, ma ciò che più mi fa venire la pelle d’oca anche ora, mentre scrivo questo post, è il ricordo di quella sensazione di libertà , avventura e spensieratezza che provavo ogni mattina e che mi accompagnava durante il percorso, mentre guardavo fuori dal finestrino ascoltando le mie canzoni preferite. L’ispirazione per tanti dei progetti che vedrete nei prossimi mesi viene da questo Coast to Coast.
E’ proprio vero: non è la destinazione ad essere importante, ma il viaggio. E che viaggio ragazzi.
