We spotted its tentative appearance on the last season’s catwalks already, but the Spring Summer 2017 collections now nailed it down for good: the paper bag trend is going to be huge in the next seasons. The designer’s results of playing with volume, copiously draping fabrics and redefining the waist line apparently fell on fruitful soil: paper bag trousers and skirts with a ruffled waist are the pieces every fashion girl is queuing up for now.
So, the season’s key piece is all about playing with form and function: in order to create paper bag-like silhouettes, the wide fitted waistlines get tied up with belts and ribbons, creating some volume on top and on bottom of it. Thanks to the loosely draped fabric around the waist, paper-bag trousers and skirts are not only super comfy, they also have a nice androgynous touch, gifting them with the effortlessness every fashionista would die for.
However, with its strongly accentuated waistline, paper bag-style skirts and trousers remain strongly feminine pieces that can totally replace any evening dress, with a pair of breathtaking heels. On the other hand, if you picture them with a little crop top and sneakers, they can make your outfit look as casual-cool as it gets, a styling option that has just been shown to us by designers such as Stella McCartney, Joseph, Balmain, Provenza Schouler and many others.
Very well then: it seems like the question is not if you will get yourself one of the paper-bag trousers or skirts. The question is rather, how did we survive without them until now?
