Happy Birthday Jake Gyllenhaal: the career of one of Hollywood’s best-loved sex symbols


Today, on his birthday, we celebrate Jake Gyllenhaal. The actor, born on 19 December 1980 in Los Angeles, California, turns 42.

His is a family of artists and technicians in the world of film. In fact, he is the son of producer and screenwriter Naomi Foner, director Stephen Gyllenhaal and younger brother of actress Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Since becoming famous at a very young age with Donnie Darko (2001), Jake Gyllenhaal has experienced almost two decades of success on the big screen. Not only has the actor been nominated for an Oscar and starred in a number of famous films, he has also become famous for his style, even away from the red carpet.

On the occasion of his birthday, we take a look at his career and the evolution of this much-loved sex symbol’s style.

Jake Gyllenhaal has come a long way since his starring role in October Sky almost 20 years ago.

His film debut came when he was only 11 years old in City Slickers (1991). In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he starred in the wonderful 1999 film October Sky, then Donnie Darko (2001), receiving an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Actor for the latter. He then played roles in films such as Bubble Boy (2001), The Good Girl (2002), Moonlight Mile (2002) and The Day After Tomorrow (2004).

Not just films, Gyllenhaal made his theatre debut in a revival of This Is Our Youth, a play that was very well received there. Returning to film, he then starred in Jarhead (2005) and Proof (2005). Of all of them, her performance in Brokeback Mountain (2005) is considered one of the best. For this he won the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor and was also nominated for other awards.

Subsequently, he starred in films such as Zodiac (2007), Brothers (2009), and Love and Other Drugs (2010). Acting opposite Anne Hathaway, he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Film.

In the 2010s he starred in End of Watch (2012), Prisoners(2013) and Nightcrawler (2014), for the latter he was nominated for a Golden Globe, SAG and won a BAFTA for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama.
