From New York to Milan, from London to Paris, even during the fashion weeks around the world we could see how grey hair is increasingly becoming one of the most popular trends.
Not only in fashion however, even celebrities seem to go crazy for this particular hair trend, but this does not seem to be a passing fashion at all, but rather a manifesto as well as an obvious message of freedom. There was a time when grey hair was hardly ever taken into consideration, and it is no coincidence that many women – and, let’s be honest, men too – tried to cover up their grey hair in an attempt to freeze time. Today, however, it seems almost pure irony that grey hair has become a trend, and it is even more interesting how much this shade fascinates the younger generation in particular.
But what is one of the reasons for choosing this trend? Some women speak of it as a message of emancipation, others are simply fascinated by it from an aesthetic point of view. As society continues to evolve over the years, beauty becomes increasingly divorced from age. Therefore, even when hair colour starts to change, women can still feel fascinating and sexy.
Why does hair turn grey? Greying of the hair is rather simple to explain. It is mainly due to the loss of a pigment called melanin, which decreases in the cells of hair follicles as a person ages. At first, hair tends to turn grey, and then becomes completely white.
And so women feel that they are also comfortable with this hair colour, without any need to look a certain way, accepting the change and evolution of their appearance as well.

Back in 2011, celebrities such as Kelly Osbourne, Lady Gaga and Nicole Richie launched the trend of bleaching – plus silver toner – hair. Today, however, even the much-talked-about Julia Fox cannot help but go along with this trend. During her arrival at the CFDA Awards 2022, the style icon showed off her wet grey hair on the red carpet. Through this love letter to ageing, Fox is also a spokesperson for this message.
Sarah Jessica Parker, on the other hand, recently put down some reactions to her new hair colour. To the many who have called her ‘brave’, she replies:
“A lot of people argue about how brave I am to have a different hair colour than I had a while ago. But I was wondering, please applaud someone else’s courage for something. Why is it still surprising when a woman chooses to have grey hair?”
