HANG ON TO YOUR HAT: STRAW HATS FOR SS19 ARE MAXI OR MINI

Straw hats are the cutting edge of millinery: among the most worn models ever, they have become iconic thanks to designers such as Coco Chanel and Christian Dior, who have transformed their informal soul by reshaping them on a couture silhouette.

Even in this SS19 we will see straw hats invading the seaside towns, and tides of girls with almost golden heads, like on the Monegasque coast in Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief.

Among the various cuts and shapes, there are two must-have types: the catwalks and the social networks have spoken, and they will be the wide and soft brim of the La Bomba chapeau by Jacquemus and the retro design of the Pamela model with black grosgrain ribbon by Chanel.

In the Jacquemus straw hat, the straw is worked by hand to create a tight weave, a characteristic that makes it extremely soft and resulting in the wide waves of the maxi brim.

The weft of the straw is circular, articulated in concentric circles that start from the oval dome (the part of the hat that covers the head) to reach the edges of the brims.

No ribbons, decorations, or scattered straw strands: the surface is clean, and the contours are sharp. For those who want something even more original, Jacquemus proposes the uneven design of Le Souk, a straw chapeau that maintains the same workmanship as the previous model, with the difference of the brim: in the front part it is short and with a lapel towards the inside that then opens in the front, which is oversize instead.

The alternative to the tropical eccentricity of Jacquemus is the Croisette style of the Pamela straw hat by Chanel. A variation compared to the classic Pamela model, usually with a wide brim, with a medium-width one that ends with tufts of straw.

In this case, the dome is semi-rigid and cylindrical in shape. The straw strands are wide and flat, crossed with fishbone to give rigidity to the structure of the hat.
