Conceived as the sublimation of bad taste with touches of irony, theatricality and exaggeration, Camp, the theme chosen for this Met Gala 2019 promised to be the most whimsical ever…and the expectations were not disappointed.
In a costume and music’s history pastiche with recalls to personalities like Vivienne Westwood, Cher e Bjork, the fashion system’s ode to exaggeration has included some of the most important names of the jet set looks made of meters and meters of chiffon, lace and feathers. To captain the army the super queen Anna Wintour in a fabulous Chanel outfit and the iconic Alessandro Michele (Gucci creative director), who in a metallic cyclamen suit walked the red carpet with the loyal friend Jared Leto. Jared didn’t hide for sure its transgressive and unconventional soul, leaving everyone speechless in a Gucci robe and the scalp of his own head in the hands.
Talking about the female parterre, there were many surprises and some disappointments too. Part of the fashion icons didn’t, indeed, take the party’s theme to the letter, showing off an unsoliticed beauty and perfection’s celebration. It was the perfect occasion to dare, experiment, exaggerate, be tremendously kitsch without ever seeming out of place.
