Riccardo Tisci’s #newera at Burberry

Burberry started a new chapter with Riccardo Tisci. London Fashion Week’s spotlights were all on the debut’s collection of the Italian designer, who was named the creative director of the Brit brand in March. Actually, it was more than just an artistic challenge: Tisci, a few days before Burberry’s fashion show, launched the #newera hashtag, announcing a true change for the maison.

Burberry is actually experiencing a radical change in every aspect: a few weeks ago, in fact, the brand announced the decision to stop the destruction of unsold clothes (news that made headlines in the last months, bringing the brand into a social media whirlwind) and to ban real fur. Tisci himself was happy to share this message with all his followers on Instagram.

Tisci is starting a new era at Burberry, but he doesn’t want to get rid of the past. Since his arrival, Tisci wanted to focus the attention again on the heritage, starting from his icons. New logo and monogram are inspired by two archive creations, especially a 1908 logo and an original monogram of the founder Thomas Burberry.

The designer, who graduated at Central Saint Martins school in London, has always been fascinated by English culture: that’s why he decided to make a tribute to the British aesthetic through spring-summer 2019 collection through three different points of view: Refined, Relaxed and Evening. Everything started from the iconic trench, who was completely revisited with details like golden rings (Kendall Jenner wore it on the catwalk), pearl and feathers or croco panels.

At first sight, the new Burberry has a true ladylike touch, with all those beautiful pleated longuettes, slim blazers and silk shirts. But there’s also room for contemporary and streetwear contaminations, like corsets to wear over logo t-shirts, destructured biker jackets and raincoats with Bambi’s motif, Tisci’s obsession since his years at Givenchy. The new logo is printed on bags and silk shirts, where the traditional check redesigned as a labyrinth.
