Paris Couture Week: Daniel Roseberry and the surreal imagery of Elsa Schiaparelli

Today Haute Couture, the week entirely dedicated to haute couture, returns to the catwalk in Paris. Opening the dances is Schiaparelli, the maison founded in 1927 by Elsa Luisa Maria Schiaparelli, she who, with innovative inventions and a profound and artistic vision of the fashion world, marked an era. In fact, Elsa Schiaparelli is considered with Gabrielle Chanel to be one of the most famous names in the history of international costume; the two were among the most powerful and visionary figures in 20th century fashion.

Today, the creative direction of the maison of she who invented shocking pink is entrusted to the American designer Daniel Roseberry. Born and raised in Texas, Schiaparelli’s current creative director trained at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. After dropping out of school, he started working at Thom Browne, and later took over as its creative director. After years of working for the American brand, his Schiaparelli Era began.

Roseberry’s story for Schiaparelli’s Couture collection for Fall Winter 2022 comes to life in the Musée des arts décoratifs in Paris, where the exhibition ‘Shocking! Les mondes surréalistes d’Elsa Schiaparelli’, dedicated to the famous designer.

Among the participants in the show will be Emma Watson, Chiara Ferragni, Rita Ora, Olivier Rousteing and Marisa Berenson, 1970s fashion icon and niece of Elsa Schiaparelli. Daniel Roseberry describes and represents timeless beauty through every single look on the catwalk.

The black and white, the eccentric gold and floral details, the draped, jewelled and velvet dresses. The interesting volumes, corsets and accessories are the fil rouge of a coherent tale that well expresses the concept of Haute Couture.

Each designer constantly experiences the pressure of the observer, of those who expect that collections such as couture must at all costs be synonymous with forms that are difficult to wear in everyday life. Daniel Roseberry sets no limits whatsoever, aiming for beauty and trying to express a vision of the maison closer to that of its founder. Accessories, starting with earrings, become the frame of bodies and embellish silhouettes.

This Haute Couture collection for Fall 2022 is Daniel Roseberry’s homage to another fashion genius and former creative director of Schiaparelli: Christian Lacroix. The imagery of one of the most famous couturiers of all time, the man who gave value to period and stage costumes, symbolising the most bizarre associations and unique tailoring techniques.
