FUTURE NOSTALGIA: THE NEW DUA LIPA’S ALBUM IS A BEAUTIFUL HYMN TO SELF-CONFIDENCE

“I am really excited about the idea that you all feel it and do what you want. I hope it will bring you some happiness, that will make you smile and make you dance. I hope to make you proud” These are the words of Dua Lipa which accompanied the unexpected release of the new album Future Nostalgia on March 27. The launch was in fact scheduled for April 3, but an unpleasant leak that began circulating online on the afternoon of Sunday 22 has overturned the plans of the singer who, in tears, announced the early exit on Instagram.

The pop icon of our day could not help but send a message of hope and positivity, a message that uses music as a means of overcoming the difficult moment to which we are all subject. The anticipated success of the song Don’t Start Now, already present in Spotify’s top hits, has dressed in a new guise that has cancelled the subtle, invisible but existing distance between the star and its audience. It was Dua herself who underlined how the health emergency caused by Covid-19, that the whole world is facing inevitably invaded all sectors, including music. The dates of the tour, in fact, have been rescheduled starting from 2021, including the Milanese date of April 30, scheduled now for February 10 next year. The realization of Future Nostalgia has occupied the last two years of Dua Lipa’s work, and today it tinges the days of all of us with pop and disco sounds.

The cover is inspired by the 50s and 60s, the Googie mood of which the singer has become a modern ambassador: dark sky and moon behind, unbuttoned pink shirt knotted under the breast and a gold hoop earring, between hands on the steering wheel of a sparkling retro vehicle. The shot, now iconic, is by the photographer Hugo Comte, who signs the whole booklet among the moved thanks on Dua’s Twitter. The attitude is unprecedented, the result of growth that is no longer afraid to dare and proud of a new awareness: the importance of nostalgia. The mood is a perfectly successful mix of the personality of Dua Lipa with inspirations from great icons: Versace, Mugler and Saint Laurent for the style, Gwen Stefani and Madonna for the aesthetics.

All this contributes to give Future Nostalgia pop and inevitably nostalgic vibrations towards a past that tries to escape the shadows of contemporary life. In addition to Don’t Start Now, among the tracks we find “Physical” as in a hymn to the 80s, but also “Break My Heart” in memory of the singer’s childhood and “Love Again“, “Your Woman” and ” Boys will be boys ”, the wonderful position to defend all the girls who are victims of violence. At the heart of the project is the truest side of Dua Lipa, accompanied by an exceptional team of guests and friends: Post Malone, Camila Cabello, Jeff Basker and many others. What can we say … we can’t wait to see you live Dua!
