Julia Roberts was born Julia Fiona Roberts on 28 October 1967 in Smyrna, Georgia in the United States. On her 55th birthday, we celebrate one of America’s best-loved actresses, one who over time has played many beloved roles in some of the most pop films of the 1990s and 2000s. Julia was born into a family that was passionate about acting, but it was only after college that she decided to move to New York City in order to pursue – with all possible means – her dream of becoming an actress. Thus came her first film role for the 1989 film Blood Red set in the late 1800s. However, this film did not allow her to take off as an actress, which she did with films such as Steel Magnolias, in which she starred alongside Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis and Sally Field. For this film Roberts received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Julia Roberts’ most successful film is undoubtedly Pretty Woman. It was thanks to this cult film of the 1990s that the actress earned her iconic status worldwide.
