To date, the film that received the most nominations has been Todd Phillips’ Joker, boasting 11, followed immediately by Once Upon a Time In Hollywood by Quentin Tarantino. What is the surprise of these Oscars? The New Zealand comic film set in Nazi Germany, Jojo Rabbit. But who will be our favourite actors nominated for the Oscars? Here is our list, the roles and films for which they are candidates:
Brad Pitt – Once upon a time in Hollywood
The crush of each of us was nominated for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for Best Supporting Actor. Brad Pitt won the Sag awards for the same role last week and now he’s bustling for the big day! In the Tarantino film, Brad Pitt plays the role of Cliff Booth, a stuntman who made his bones in the westerns and who now, stunt double and chauffeur of Rick Dalton (Leonardo di Caprio), lives in a truck with a dog that becomes his most great life partner. The story focuses heavily on the figure of Cliff who after months overseas and an extra wife, has been described by Pitt himself as “a man who gets up, takes off his shirt and does not get along with his wife”.
Joaquin Phoenix – Joker
Let’s say that we all expected it a bit, Joker was the most successful film in the past year and it seems that the motivation lies in the masterful interpretation of its protagonist, Joaquin Phoenix, Oscar nominee for Best Actor. In the film about the story of one of the most famous protagonists of the DC, Phoenix, plays the role of Arthur Fleck, a man with a tragic life who saw him ignored, trampled on, bullied and made fun of by anyone to the point of developing a nervous tic that leads him to laugh out of proportion uncontrollably. The turning point of the film occurs when Fleck is accused of murder …
Renée Zellweger – Judy
It has been defined as a thrilling performance that will not be forgotten, that of Renée Zellweger in Judy, for which she has an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. In the film, Zellweger plays the role of Judy Garland in the last period of her life, when to arouse admiration and the memory of a golden age of American cinema was her daily bread. However, Zellweger’s introspection focuses on Judy’s most deprived and unknown side, that of a single woman, divorced four times, without the voice she once had and not even a contract. Her life lives a sudden twist that will bring her back on stage, but with her, on stage, there will also be all the ghosts that have always haunted her.
Scarlett Johansson – Jojo Rabbit and Marriage Story
Double nomination this year for the beautiful Scarlett Johansson: in Jojo Rabbit for Best Supporting Actress and in Marriage Story for Best Actress. In Jojo Rabbit, Johansson plays the role of the mother of the protagonist, the Nazi son Jojo who has Adolf Hitler as his imaginary friend. The mother becomes the cause of her son’s life change after his decision to hide Elsa, a Jewish girl, at home. In Marriage Story, Scarlett Johansson is instead the protagonist. Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) is an actress who is separating from her husband Charlie, a theatre director. The two live far away, Nicole has moved with her son to Los Angeles but wants to divorce to change her life; the story continues with a struggle between the two, who no longer recognize each other by becoming the most monstrous and grotesque versions of themselves.
Saoirse Ronan – Little Women
Directed by Greta Gerwig, the film Little Women based on the novel of the same name by Louisa May Alcott has received 6 nominations. Saoirse Ronan plays Jo, one of the four protagonist sisters, and for her performance, she earned a nomination for Best Actress. Nominated for Best Supporting Actress, Margot Robbie took her revenge from Once Upon A Time In Hollywood with Bombshell. The film has as its main theme the value of women in American society and Margot Robbie uses exceptional companions to interpret it: Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron. Margot Robbie is Kayla Pospisil, producer of the television channel in which Donald Trump at the time of his elections is accused of misogyny. The film, after the Weinstein case, is direct and deals with the theme of abuse of women who want to make a career without filters; in particular, Robbie admits that she accepted the advances of the president of the channel she works for.
