You’d better learn how to live without using your fingers too much. Since fashion will leave you with no choice, just be prepared: sleeves are getting extra long this season, completely covering both hands and creating slouchy silhouettes.
Having déjà-vu? Well, those overhyped hoodies from Vetements might be popping up in your mind right now — a laid-back luxury brand that is still all over the street style circuit since its breakthrough two years ago. But no, I’m not specifically pointing at those constantly sold-out designs from Demna Gvasalia. Nevertheless, designers still need to be mentioned when it comes to actual fashion: with his last collections, he actually pioneered one of the major fashion trends 2017 — elongated sleeves!
Instead of dying down as a short-lived trend, as many fashion editors predicted after the first Vetements hype wave, the overlong sleeves so typical of the brand’s aesthetic surprisingly made their way into a lot of other brands’ collections. This season, they got picked up by so many other designers that the hype literally became one of the main fashion trends for 2017. Seen at Dior’s, at Marni’s, at Loewe’s and at Chloé’s shows, it seems like avant-garde sleeves have to be extra-long, extra-large and extra Vetements-inspired, nowadays.
Sure, extra-long sleeves might not be super practical to wear, but since when does fashion care about being down-to-earth? We still have to figure out how to survive a whole day without using our hands though. No food, no smartphone, no elevator (in case your sleeves get stuck in the doors). Scare or dare? We say: let’s go for it. We can still think about how to handle our mummed hands later. Right now, we are longing for longer sleeves. Aren’t you, too?
