Fashion: the revenge of the streetwear

In the eternal battle between high fashion and streetwear, this one seems to score a goal. The setting was the latest Paris Men’s Fashion Week, where the most awaited event of the season took place: the first Louis Vuitton menswear collection designed by new creative director Virgil Abloh. It was a big show, with a star-studded front row and a gigantic collection full of clothes and accessories that will definitely become best sellers.

Virgil Abloh’s debut at LVMH‘s biggest brand was a truly watershed for the fashion biz. One of the most ancient French maison didn’t hire a traditional designer like all the creative directors that are working for big brands, grown up in fashion ateliers’ backyards, but a man that wrote his CV in music (he’s Kanye West‘s pupil), architecture and lifestyle. He’s not a designer, he’s more a creative person, that understood the need to bring streetwear in the luxury world before many others.

Highsnobiety told us a few days ago: “In 2018, being cool isn’t a lifestyle, it’s a profession”. There’s so much truth in these words. It’s not only useful to know how to sketch, to cut, to know all the fabrics in the world a and to create new shades to be relevant in the fashion industry. Today, it’s important as well to enter the consumer’s imagery, to understand his icons, what music he listens to, where he goes, what he eats. In the social networks era, fashion has become the essence of lifestyle: the clothes we wear must express ourselves al 100%. Is there anything to express us better than our everyday closet?

Abloh was among the first creatives to understand how it’s important to be relevant today, not in the future. He admitted himself he doesn’t want to design icons, but to create pieces for now. Will its Hologram Keepall last only for a season? No problem, the season after there will be another bag to drive his fans crazy. Actually, today’s clients are followers, that every brand should keep close with a sharp but fast style message.

Is high fashion going to retire? Hell no, and upcoming Haute Couture Week will definitely show how is it still going on strong. Undoubtedly, the streetwear revenge is already a truth: just think about how traditional designers like Demna Gvasalia, Raf Simons and Kim Jones already opened their doors to their ateliers. Now, thanks to Virgil Abloh, way more. Discover all the best looks from Louis Vuitton menswear spring-summer 2019 collection!
