The Blackpink phenomenon: between hits, collaborations and albums

Blackpink (in the correct form BLΛƆKPIИK), you know, is the well-known South Korean girl band formed by Kim Ji-soo, Jennie Kim, Rosé, and Lisa. Their chosen name represents an oxymoron, namely the strength and sweetness typical of contemporary girls. They are a group formed after a series of auditions organized by YG Entertainment, which was looking for young talent to form into a new girl group. In recent years, with their incredible successes, the girls have literally conquered the music world around the world. They are the queens of Spotify and, obv of YouTube, with the most subscribers among all the artists on these platforms. The Blackpinks have also climbed the U.S. charts, reaching the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 with their hit “Ice Cream” feat. Selena Gomez in 2020, and in 2022 the top spot on the Billboard 200 with their album “Born Pink.”

But beware, the records do not end there! Blackpink were the first K-pop artists to enter Billboard’s emerging artists chart, even earning a certification from the Recording Industry Association of America for the song “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” in 2018. In addition, many of their music videos have accumulated over one billion (and even two) views on Youtube, not surprisingly they have now been enshrined as an international phenomenon. Not only music though, their influence also extends to the fashion system. They have become style icons and have collaborated with many fashion houses including Dior, Chanel and Saint Laurent.

The Blackpinks are a phenomenon that goes beyond music,
influencing popular culture and defining
new trends in fashion.

The Blackpink have now won the hearts of audiences with their unique musical style and incredible stage presence. Recently, the four girls once again wrote a piece of history. In fact, they performed during the last Coachella as the first K-pop group, amid fireworks and special effects.

In summary, Blackpink’s musical journey…

In 2016, Blackpink debuted with the single “Square One,” which included the hit songs “Boombayah” and “Whistle.” They went on to release the second single “Square Two” in the same year, featuring the tracks “Playing with Fire” and “Stay.” In 2017, they topped the Billboard world chart with the track “As If It’s Your Last.” In 2018, they released the EP “Square Up,” with the famous song “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” inside, which was appreciated both in South Korea and abroad. In 2020, they collaborated with Lady Gaga for the song “Sour Candy” and anticipated their second studio album, titled “The Album,” with the single “How You Like That.” Blackpink were also the stars of the documentary “Blackpink: The Movie.” In 2022, they released their second album “Born Pink,” led by the single “Shut Down.”
