A 2017 filled with art: a guide to all the exhibitions you shouldn’t miss in Italy

2017 will be the year of long weekends in Italy, and it will also be a year full of art, at least in our country. Yes, because the agenda is full of many exclusive events this year, ranging from those featuring 20th century masters like Manet, to those about great artists from our past, like Caravaggio, as well as some events featuring contemporary art, such as Keith Haring‘s exhibition. Whether you are Italian or not, there are no excuses: here are the exhbiitions you just can’t miss, from the North to the South of the country.

The Gelman Collection: Mexican 20th century art. Palazzo Albergati, Bologna. Until March 26 2017
This exhibition features one of the most important collections of Mexican 20th century art, including works by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Some of these works were previously unseen in Italy, and offer an exceptional perspective on Frida’s challenging life. The exhibition opened in November and was immediately very popular — it will be open until March, and you really can’t miss it!

Manet and modern Paris. Palazzo Reale, Milano. March 3 to July 2
France will seem even closer thanks to this event. Organized in collaboration with the Musée d’Orsay, it’s a culturally remarkable representation of the time in which Paris transitioned into modernity. This golden age is showcased with 50 masterpieces by Manet, Renoir, Degas and other masters representative of Paris at the turn of the century.

Vasilij Kandinskij, knight errant. MUDEC, Milan. March 15 until July 2
The king of abstract art will be center-stage in Milan in 2017. This exhibition, focusing on the relationship between art and science, and on the idea of travel as a cognitive adventure, is a beautiful journey that will lead us in the discovery of an unusual perspective on the Russian painter’s art.

Picasso-Parade. Naples 1917. Naples. April 10 to July 10
This exhibit follows Picasso’s steps in his inspirational journey in Italy in 1917. The exposition focuses on the important role the city of Naples has played in the artist’s life, influencing his future work. The exhibition, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Picasso’s visit, will take place in two different locations, at the Capodimonte Museum, and at the Pompeii Antiquarium.

Keith Haring. About Art. Palazzo Reale, Milan. February 20 until June 18
Destiny was cruel to a great artist like Keith Haring, who passed away at only 31. Despite that, he still became one of the world’s most famous contemporary artists. Join him on a colorful, sensational journey, exploring works that are still embellishing houses and buildings of major cities all over the world.

Modigliani. Palazzo Ducale, Genoa. March 16 to July 16
Amedeo Modigliani was a major champion of Expressionism, and a source of pride for Italy abroad. Like Keith Haring, he also passed away at a young age, but his work is probably some of the most recognizable art there is. This exhibition in Genoa will be a great chance to see his art live, and you really shouldn’t miss it.

Dentro Caravaggio. Palazzo Reale, Milan. 28 September to January 29
This will possibly be one of the most spectacular exhibitions of the last few years. It deals with Caravaggio’s voyage of self-analysis which continued throughout his life. His personal affairs and his artistic development are showcased by a selection of works that are a testimony to Michelangelo Merisi’s greatness. We still have to wait for a few months to visit it, but we are really looking forward to it!

Mirò. Palazzo Albergati, Bologna. April, details TBA
After showcasing Frida Kahlo’s work, this museum is set to host the work of another 20th century art legend, hosting about a thousand works by Joan Mirò, introducing us all to this eclectic Catalan artist’s world.
